I read a journal entry I had written just over a year ago at the dawn of turning 26.  I intended to start a blog that journaled goals that I have in life; to take pictures and tell stories.  I would go skydiving.  Travel in a hot air balloon at sunrise.  See the world.  Bathe with an elephant.  All equally on my list.  All equally left undone.  A year ago, I felt an insatiable desire to live life with more passion, more adventure. I felt that without those things, I wasn't living life to the fullest.  So badly, I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone, to feel scared, to feel exhilarated, to feel humbled.  But now, as I approach my 27th birthday, I have to admit, my adventurous spirit has subsided.  To be honest, I don't want to go skydiving.  I mean, what's the point of jumping out of a perfectly good air plane?  To possibly have your parachute fail, fly into a power line and get electrocuted?  Maybe that's worst case scenario.  But do I want to take the risk?  Not so much.  Today, my focus has switched, from living, to simply living.  To say that I don't want passion and adventure would be completely false, and to say that I have stopped dreaming, would be all wrong.  But I just dream of different things.  A baby, friendship, love, a professional passion.  I dream more of the life I want to create, rather than the life I dreamt about in the skies, on mountains, or beneath the seas.  And with 100% honesty, I am more than perfectly OK with that.  In fact, I'm excited for the adventure that lies ahead.

Great great post! I think there is a lot to be said about enjoying your life as it is. Somethings we would all like to do eventually. But when your thoughts are consumed with "I would feel complete if only . . ." you fail to live for the here and now.

I hope turning 27 is fantastic for you. Love this outfit as well!

Beautifully put. I believe there's untapped joy in simply living. Good luck with this year's goal!

Thanks for sharing your reflections. Though I am a year behind you, I think I am still on a similar shift in perspective of what I want my life to be. Hope you are able to have some of these sweet simple blessings in life, that actually are rather rich and adventurous in and of themselves.
Much love,

Love this post! I feel the exact same way. In my early 20's I was so eager to take every risk, and now...I am 28..and my adventures are a little more simplictic. Where did all my energy go?

Oh the joys of getting older! :)

Such a great post! When I was younger I went skydiving... Would I do it again??? NOT a chance :) Our priorities change over years... I'm glad to hear that you are happy with your life :)

Could not agree with you more! I'm not so much for jumping out of planes. There comes a time when we look around and realize that normal things aren't bad and that we don't need to be virtually insane to live life. We can just live it, on our own terms and be perfectly happy!

Please tell me you're a model. So beyond stunning.

I love the skirt, so summer-y and chic :)

Love everything you just said!
I totally agree with you. I've also written down in the past, so many things I want to do. And then I never do them. Isn't that always the way?

Unknown said...

I agree with you, when I was younger I wanted to do all big and scary things and thought it would make me happy, or feel like i've accomplished something. Now just the little things make me happy.

I really like your skirt by the way, I have a slight obsession with polka dots.

Such a beautiful and honest insight. I too sometimes think I should be doing more, adventures and living large, but at the end of the day there are simple chance that are just a fulfilling! You've got a good new list :)

I went skydiving. For me, it was an incredible opportunity to explore fear and realize that anything is possible in this life if you just walk forward...even if that forward movement takes you through something you fear. Alas, I also disovered why birds sing--the sky is so glorious and peaceful!

I guess as we grow older, our dreams become more realistic and we tend to wish for the simpler things in life. Not because we're settling, but because we learn how to value the simple life. There's nothing wrong with wanting less extravagant ventures, what's more important is driving to what we want in life and learning how to enjoy the whole journey.

Gertrude said...

Totally agree! Though I guess everyone at some point in time desires to do something more risky. Love the skirt by the way :) xo

quite possibly my favorite outfit you have ever worn. :)

appreciating simple happiness is what life is all about i think. I've had a lot of adventure all over the world and high in the sky, but now i have the 'been there done that' feeling whenever i go for another adrenaline activity.
good luck with creating your life!

First of all, this outfit is amazing and you look amazing in it!
Second, I am feeling the same way right now as you were last year. I have so many outrageous dreams that I hope will come true one day, or they will just subside and I will be content. Whatever gives. Enjoy your life no matter what the circumstance.

I agree! As we get older, our sense of adventure changes. Things that looked exciting may look a litte scarier and also more unreasonable. I'm 30 now and I haven't done all the things I thought I would. I've had my fair share of adventure though, and I will have more adventure still. It's just the perspective that changed. I want different things now, and things that seemed important at 20 don't have the same appeal anymore. I could still do them, but I don't really want to anymore and it would probably feel like chasing a ghost. I guess that's what they call "growing up". You change, whether you want to or not ^^ But it's not a bad thing, it's just normal and good to grow out of some shoes and into different, probably better new shoes :-)

Beautifully said Katie, and I couldn't agree more as I get older the same holds true for me as well. I love the idea of simply living and being present in my life, rather than chasing grand adventures. And I must say you look extra gorgy in these photos, love your beautiful skirt, you've styled it flawlessly. xo veronika
